About Us:

Bodeker Scientific is a research company with expertise in atmospheric and climate research. The company conducts original scientific research through contracts held with both national funding agencies and international organisations. The company operates as a federation of largely independent researchers who collaboratively work on shared contracts under a commonly agreed company constitution. We focus on conducting high quality research within the time and financial constraints imposed by our research contracts. To achieve this goal, decision making in the company is participatory with an emphasis on personal responsibility.

About the Role:

We seek an enthusiastic and energetic IT infrastructure manager and programmer, with an infinite capacity to not know what can’t be done, who is ready and willing to work in an agile and innovative research environment. The successful applicant will support our team of scientists in managing the IT infrastructure in our Alexandra office, running climate models on site and remotely, performing data analyses, and providing programming support to the team. IT infrastructure includes, but is not limited to:

* Server infrastructure (physical and virtual)
* Network management
* Data storage management, both on and off site
* Email
* Website development and management
* Project management tools such as JIRA and Confluence.

The expectation is that the successful applicant will spend about 30% of their time on IT related work and 70% of their time on programming and data analyses in support of the scientific team. We encourage applications from experienced IT specialists with strong python programming skills and an interest in atmospheric and climate science.

Applicants are required to have a relevant qualification e.g. Bachelor of computer science or similar, or a proven track record of relevant IT and programming experience. We seek applicants with a strong mix of the following skills/expertise:

Essential Skills:

* At least 2 years of experience in Python programming.
* Demonstrable experience in other programming languages such as C++, Delphi/pascal, matlab or IDL.
* Demonstrable experience in IT infrastructure management, e.g. network, virtual machines, data backups, data management.
* A demonstrated ability to think laterally. The research that we undertake is innovative and requires a high degree of creativity.
* Fluent in spoken and written English. Ability to clearly document procedures, processes and work performed.
* Excellent organization skills, i.e. able to juggle a number of tasks with varying priorities.
* A rich tool box of data analysis techniques and methodologies.
* Ability to work collaboratively in a team.
* At least 5 years of experience in managing Linux and Windows operating systems.

Preferred Skills:

* Knowledge of, and experience in, using cloud-based high performance computer facility (HPCF) services such as AWS.
* Knowledge of, and experience in, machine learning.
* Experience in setup, configuration and operation of climate and weather forecasting models.

While the term of employment is currently fixed at 2 years, the expectation is that, depending on continued funding, the term of employment will be extended.
