The role and opportunity

AgResearch is seeking a dedicated Farm Senior to join our Woodlands Research Farm in Invercargill on a full-time, permanent basis.

Take a leading role within the farm team to assist the Farm Manager with the coordination of farm operations by contributing to building an engaged and collaborative team that support research outcomes and the successful operation of the Woodlands Research Farm.

Our Research Farm has a total area of approximately 240ha. It comprises of sheep and is located in the Southland District, approximately 20 mins north-east of Invercargill. Sheep research projects at Woodlands include breeding/reproduction (including Central Progeny Testing trials), Nutrition, Methane emissions, and Feed Intake.

What you will be doing

You will support research and commercial outcomes through the effective delivery of operational farm activities in line with trial plans and good farming practise. Reporting to the Research Farm Manager, you will be responsible for the following duties:

Assist the Farm Manager to co-ordinate delegated farm activities within financial and physical plans as required
Assist the Farm Manager to submit and meet report deadlines in accordance with requirements
Support strong relationships with key Farm customers (internal and external) to ensure the farm provides client focused delivery to science
Work collaboratively with science employees to support research goals
Adopt and implement leading edge technical management practices with particular emphasis on those developed by AgResearch to enhance the performance and credibility of farms.
Support the farm manager to schedule and manage machinery repairs and farm maintenance.


Your ideal background

Significant experience in farming operations
Experience in a senior role, supervising staff or operating at 2IC level would be desirable
Good knowledge of pasture management and feed allocation in sheep and beef farming
Experience with animal health and good stock handling skills
Experience with animal recording, vaccinations, and lambing is essential
Knowledge of Farm Quality Assurance programmes
Must be physically fit, able to handle/crutch/drench sheep
Competent with operating tractors and machinery and maintaining fencing/water supplies etc.
Competent knowledge of MS Office and Farm Technologies
Current, clean Class 1 full driver's license is essential
