Passionate animal husbandry professional required. Substantial private aviaries requiring a full time staff member for all aspects of avian management. You will hit the ground running coming into busy breeding season, experience in egg incubation and hand rearing birds will be essential.

Applicants will require a tertiary qualification in either Biology, Zoology or animal management. Experience and confidence with parrots and other birds with a solid understanding of species nutritional requirements is also a pre-requisite.

Potential accommodation included within package. Individuals with the ability to move and live onsite will be given preference. Sunny Whangarei role in a rural setting. Close to main centre and less than 2hrs north of Auckland.

We have a great opportunity for suitably skilled person to join our dedicated team. We are seeking to employ an experienced bird keeper with well-developed skills working with all types of birds. You will need to be a highly driven, organised and energetic individual with considerable passion for birds, and animals.

The ideal applicant will possess the following skills and attributes:

Proven experience in incubation and hatching of multiple avian species, with experience in hand-rearing of parrots chicks from hatch is essential.
A tertiary qualification relating to a career working with animals. Potentially Biology, Zoology, Vet nursing, Care of Captive Wild Animals, Animal Management or similar husbandry qualification.
A working knowledge of avian nutrition, handling, capture and banding is necessary.
Proven ability to work in a sole charge position, with great organisational skills and good communication essential.
Staff management, roster setting and delegation are required.
Responsible mature attitude and team player with good computer skills.
Good level of physical fitness and health with practical maintenance skills such as aviary repair, and possible horticultural knowledge.

Duties include …

Providing a very high standard of daily care and welfare to a variety of exotic parrots, gamebirds, waterfowl, poultry dove and finch species.
All aspects of aviary management, care and feeding will be required.
Daily behavioural observations, health checks and record keeping.
Maintenance of aviaries, enclosures and surrounding habitats, including planting and predator control.

As animals require care seven days a week, there will be some weekend work which would be discussed. Salary will be in accordance with skills and experience.
